Sending your child off to school for the very first time is a big moment — for them and for you. It’s the start of a brand-new chapter, and the way you prepare can set the tone for how they feel about school.
1. Practise the School Day
Play ‘school’ at home — get them to pack a bag, practise putting on their uniform, and eat lunch at a set time. It helps make the real thing less overwhelming.
2. Visit the School Together
If possible, take a tour before the first day. Let them see their classroom, meet the teacher, and even play in the playground. Familiarity reduces first-day nerves.
3. Teach Little Independence Skills
Show them how to put on their coat, open their lunch box, and wash their hands without help. It’s amazing how much confidence comes from being able to do things on their own.
4. Read Books About Starting School
Stories about characters going to school can make the whole idea more relatable and less scary.
5. Keep Goodbyes Short and Positive
On the big day, a quick hug and an enthusiastic “Have a great day!” works wonders. Lingering or looking worried can make them feel unsure.
