75% of children under 5 now have access to a tablet or smartphone, according to a new study.
Childwise, a leading specialist in research with children, surveyed 1000 parents about their under 5’s screen time habits.
The research also revealed that most 3, 4 and 5 year-olds had their own tablet or PC.
Jenny Ehren, the Childwise research manager said,
“The increasing use of connected devices by preschoolers this year may reflect growing access to on-demand services, especially subscription-based options such as Netflix, which has quickly risen through the ranks over the last three to four years,”
“Their list of favourite programmes is becoming more varied. And whilst many are drawn from across the different preschool channels, we are beginning to see more references to content exclusively available on YouTube and paid-for streaming services.

The study showed that children were spending an average of 2 hours and 48 minutes a day just watching video content in its various forms. This is an increase from 2 hours and 36 minutes last year and 2 hours and 24 minutes in 2014.
It also indicated that boys watch for longer periods of time.
Whether we like it or not, screens are everywhere our children look nowadays meaning the responsibility for parents to manage screen time even more important.
