Let’s be honest, where you stay on a family holiday can either make everything feel easy, or turn the whole thing into a bit of a mission. We’ve all stayed in places that looked great online but didn’t come close in real life. Since then, we’ve all got a bit of a checklist. Nothing fancy, just a few things we always look out for that tend to make the difference between a good trip and a stressful one.
Here’s what we’ve learned.
1. Space around the pool
You want enough room so it doesn’t feel like everyone is squeezed into one corner. Plenty of loungers, some shade and a bit of breathing room make the pool area much more enjoyable.
It also helps when you can keep an eye on the kids without constantly weaving through crowds.
2. A shallow area for younger kids
If you are travelling with younger children, a shallow pool or splash area is a must. It means they can play safely while still feeling like part of the action.
Parents can relax a bit more knowing the water is not too deep.
3. Slides or water features
Slides instantly turn a normal pool into something kids want to spend hours in. Even a couple of simple water features or fountains can keep them entertained all afternoon.
It is often the thing kids talk about most after the trip.
4. Easy access from the hotel
If the pool is right outside the hotel or just a short walk away, everything becomes easier. Forgotten towels, snack breaks or bathroom trips suddenly stop being a huge effort.
It is one of those small details that makes the day run more smoothly.
5. Somewhere for parents to relax
While the kids are in the water, parents usually want somewhere comfortable to sit. Shade, loungers and maybe a nearby bar or snack spot all help.
It means everyone gets something out of the afternoon.
Worth getting right
Pools are often the centre of family holidays. If the hotel gets that part right, the whole trip becomes more relaxed and enjoyable.
