It is believed that the male balding hormones called androgens make bald men more susceptible to the severe effects of Covid.
American Scientists have revealed that bald men are two and a half times more likely to experience the more severe side effects of Covid-19 according to a report. It is believed that the male balding hormones called androgens make men more susceptible to the severe effects of Covid.
Researchers believe it could be because androgens, male sex hormones like testosterone, are boosting the ability of coronavirus to attack cells.
They have called this knowledge a “game-changer” as it allows doctors to quickly identify which of their patients are more likely to need to be admitted to the ICU.
The findings were presented at EADV’s 2021 Spring Symposium after researchers observed the disproportionate number of men with androgenetic alopecia who were hospitalised with Covid 19.
The apparent link between baldness and severe symptoms is so strong that experts have called for it to be classified as a risk factor
In an interview with The Telegraph, Dr. Carlos Wambier a professor of Dermatology at Brown University said;
“We really think that baldness is a perfect predictor of severity,”
“We think androgens or male hormones are definitely the gateway for the virus to enter our cells.”
The study was of 65 hospitalised Covid-19 positive men. The results were that men who did not suffer from balding were significantly less likely to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit compared to their bald counterparts.
Dr. Andy Goren, Chief Medical Officer of Applied Biology at Irvine, California was called on to explain the phenomenon.
“The identification of a biomarker connected with the androgen receptor is another piece of evidence highlighting the important role of androgens in COVID-19 disease severity.

“This research demonstrates the scientific value of dermatology by offering key insights into the role of genetics and its link to COVID disease.
Now that this area for concern has been identified, researchers have found a promising therapy that would be using a novel drug that blocks the androgen receptor.
