Two-metre rule reduced as pubs and restaurants in England given green light to reopen from 4 July

Revealing the latest changes in the lockdown protocol, Johnson says the 2-metre social distancing rule will be reduced to 1m-plus.

The prime minister has shared that a reduction in the 2m social distancing rule, at the same time as giving the go-ahead for pubs, restaurants, hotels, hairdressers and barbers in England to reopen from 4 July.

“Where it is possible to keep two metres apart, people should,” the prime minister said.

For example, pubs and restaurants will be required to take the names and contact details of customers, in case they have to be contacted as part of the government’s test and trace programme to contain the spread of Covid-19.

“All hospitality indoors will be limited to table service and our guidance will encourage minimal staff and customer contact,” Mr Johnson told MPs.

“We will ask businesses to help NHS Test and Trace respond to any local outbreaks by collecting contact details from customers as happens in other countries and we will work with the sector to make this manageable.”

The PM said every step of relaxing the lockdown is “scrupulously weighed“.
