Buying for Baby: A Dads Newborn Checklist

There’s no escaping the fact that you do need a lot of things in preparation for a baby. But, and it’s a big but that could save you a tonne of money, you probably don’t need everything the TV, the NCT or the shops say you need. The list below covers the bare essentials, without being extravagant. We’ve done some extra work for you as well and found you some great deals on some of this stuff too.

Clothing

 8 vests or onesies (mix of short-sleeve and long-sleeve)
 8 one-piece baby grows (try to get ones that zip up; much less fiddly!)
 2 hats, even if it’s a summer baby
 2 pairs of scratch mittens, to keep baby from scratching his face
 2 cardigans or jumpers

Blankets

 3 large cotton blankets

Feeding (Not all of this is necessary, depending on whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle feeding) 

 8 Bottles & teats
 Milk storage containers
 Nursing pillow
 Nursing bras
 Breast pads
 Lotion for sore nipples
 Bottle brush
 Formula
 Thermal bottle carrier

Nappy changing

 Changing mat

 Sudocrem

 Baby wipes

 Nappies (New born or size 1)

Bathtime

 2 fitted sheets for cot
 2 fitted sheets for moses basket mattress
 2 Swaddle sheets (if swaddling)
 Room thermometer

Out and About

 Sun shade for the car
 Sun shade for the pushchair
 Cot
 Rattles and other baby toys
 Feeding chair (Also known as ‘a chair’)
Extras
 Stock the cupboards with food and drink for mum and dad
