How to make your home more energy efficient

Make your home more energy efficient (1)

As the cost of living crisis bites, we are all looking for ways to make our money go further. One such way is to make your home more energy efficient.

Whether you need a few quick wins or you can afford to invest for the future, these tips will help you reduce your energy bills at a time when the costs of powering and heating our homes is escalating.

Tips to make your home more energy efficient

  1. Insulate The loft

At between £5 and £10 per square metres, loft insulation isn’t too expensive. And it does a great job of reducing heat loss and making properties more energy efficient

More of the heat stays within the property. Less escapes through the roof and you reduce waste. In the winter, when it is expected prices will rise even further, this means you have to have the heating on less. Therefore, you spend less cash.

In addition, you could insulate the walls for an even more energy efficient effect.

  1. Switch lightbulbs to LEDs

One minor change you can make with a significant effect for making your home more energy efficient is installing LEDs instead of regular lightbulbs. LED lightbulbs are more efficient and, for £100 and even possibly less, you can make a big difference to your energy bills.

  1. Install a new boiler

Boiler technology is advancing at a rapid rate and the major manufacturers are always coming up with more efficient solutions. More more efficient a boiler, the less power is wasted making the boiler work and more is turned into heat for your radiators or hot water.

Many leading models are more than 90% efficient, compared with older boilers that might be just 65% efficient. A boiler is a big investment, but you can save hundreds of pounds a year on your bills and you are also helping the environment too.

  1. Fit energy efficient windows

Energy efficient windows keep the heat in, reducing the amount of energy you need to keep warm. But they also have a number of other benefits. They reduce cold spots and draughts by cutting heat loss. This cuts the risk of condensation and dampness in the property, making it a more pleasant place to live.

They also reduce noise from outdoors, making life more pleasurable as well as helping you make your home more energy efficient.
