Keep window blind cords and chains out of the reach of babies and toddlers.

“When I went upstairs to check on my little girl, something unspeakable had happened.”

This is an extract from Macy and Karoline’s story.

Macy died after becoming entangled in a blind cord.

She was tall for her age, and by standing on a
mattress she had been able to reach the unrestrained blind cord by her bedroom window.

According to recent research, most householders are unaware of window blind accidents and most blinds
are fitted by homeowners themselves.

The British Blind and Shutter Association is helping raise awareness together with the Child Accident
Prevention Trust and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

  • A blind operating cord or chain that could form a loop must be kept out of the reach of babies and
    young children.
  • There are safety devices for every type of blind including cord/chain tidys and tensioners as well
as cleats for storing excess cord.
  • A blind which is Safe by Design is one that is cordless or has concealed or tensioned cords –
always consider this option first when buying new blinds.
