Justin’s Journey: Embracing Solo Fatherhood After Loss
In August 2019, Justin faced the unimaginable—the passing of his wife, leaving him to care for their two young children, aged five and seven. Confronted with this life-altering event, Justin made a pivotal decision:
“What I quickly realised was that I had a decision to make in terms of whether I was going to prioritise being at home with the children or whether I was going to keep the family business going.”
Choosing to prioritise his family, Justin sold his business within six months, dedicating himself fully to his children. The subsequent COVID-19 lockdowns, while challenging for many, provided Justin with invaluable time to bond and support his kids:
“That, strangely for us, was a real godsend. Having that quality time and being able to prioritise the home learning, being there for them. It actually worked for us as a family.”
Seeking support, Justin connected with the charity Widowed and Young (WAY), finding solace in a community of individuals facing similar challenges. Inspired by his experiences, he began writing books aimed at helping bereaved children navigate their emotions.
Reflecting on his journey, Justin emphasises the importance of self-compassion:
“Just getting out of bed, getting dressed, making the children breakfast and getting them off to school, on some days that’s a good day. Not putting pressure on yourself is the biggest thing.”
Darren and Kyle: Building a Family Through Adoption
For Darren and his husband Kyle, the dream of parenthood was always present. After careful consideration, they chose adoption as their path to building a family. Today, they are proud fathers to two sons, aged four and 21 months.
Fatherhood brought a transformative perspective to Darren’s life:
“It’s changed everything, in a really positive way. Suddenly, things that felt they were important before… you realise are not important.”
The experience allowed him to step back from the relentless pace of life, offering clarity and purpose:
“It’s allowed me to step back from the rat race, and that’s really helped me put things into perspective. It was something I was so nervous going into; you never have that self-belief until you do it.”
While uncertainties remain, Darren finds confidence in forging his own path:
“There’s still times now when I don’t know if I’m doing it right, but you find your own way.”
Beyond personal growth, Darren and Kyle take pride in providing a loving home:
“Secondary to all that, we’ve given a child a home. As a gay couple, we wanted to adopt because we felt we could offer a child a loving environment.”
