The summer has been long, fun, and probably a little chaotic — but now it’s time to get the kids back into the school mindset. Whether your children are excited or dreading it, a little preparation can make the transition smoother for everyone (including you).
1. Ease Back Into a Routine
Late nights and lie-ins are great for summer, but term-time mornings come early. Start adjusting bedtimes and wake-up times gradually in the week or two before school starts so that the first morning back doesn’t feel like a shock to the system.
2. Get Organised Early
Don’t leave it until the night before to find out their shoes are too small or their PE kit is missing a sock. Do a full check of uniforms, lunch boxes, stationery, and school bags ahead of time.
3. Revisit Learning Gently
A bit of reading together, a fun science experiment, or even playing maths games can help wake up their brains. Keep it light so it doesn’t feel like homework — the goal is to get them thinking again.
4. Talk About the Year Ahead
Ask what they’re looking forward to and if anything is worrying them. Sometimes, just talking through the unknown can take away a lot of stress.
5. Plan Something Fun for the First Week
It could be a special breakfast, a family movie night, or an after-school trip to the park. Having something to look forward to can make the return feel more exciting.
