Life After Sport: What Happens After the Final Whistle

Article 30

What happens when your career ends — and your identity goes with it?

Chris Robshaw knows. After years of professional rugby, stepping off the pitch wasn’t just physical. It was emotional. And complicated.

“You can’t replace that feeling of 80,000 fans. You just have to let it go.”

For years, Chris was “the rugby guy.” Then suddenly, he was at home — with a baby, a toddler, and no playbook.

“I’d done high-pressure games. But nothing prepares you for public toddler meltdowns.”

So he rebuilt. Slowly. Purposefully.

He dove into:

  • Coaching

  • Charity work through the Kerslake Robshaw Foundation

  • Wine consultancy

  • Fatherhood

“Now I chase quiet moments with my kids instead of trophies.”

Chris talks openly about how tough the transition can be for athletes — no routine, no validation, no spotlight. But he’s found purpose in parenting, community, and creating something lasting beyond sport.

His advice? Be honest. Be patient. Let go of the old chapter — and start writing the next one.
